What is the ASET?

The Angular Spectrum Evaluation Tool from AGS is one of the ways that we weed out the best from the mediocre. What this tool shows us directly correlates to what the viewer is going to observe with the eyes in everyday practical lighting environments.

This little scope goes on top of the diamond and from that we retrieve an ASET image. We can also acquire the ASET image from computer software that traces the diamond with a laser.

In the ASET image we are going to see three colors each representing a different angular spectrum.

Green represents 0-45 degrees - think of light coming off the horizon like a sunset or light bouncing off of objects.

Red represents 45-75 degrees - this is usually where most of all your strongest light will be coming from.

Blue represents 75-90 degrees - this is typically head/body obstruction.

We want to see as much red as possible, a healthy distribution of blue since this creates contrast and minimal green. Certain shapes and cutting styles lend themselves better to excellent ASET results while others do not even if they are considered rare in their category. For example, most fancy shapes that we out-source are always going to have a ton of green as that is simply the nature of those shapes. You will witness this in the fourth video below.

Our branded diamonds (August Vintage & Distinctive) are always going to have consistently outstanding ASET results because we purposely designed the angles and proportions to draw in and reflect light to the highest possible level. To those who do not want one of our branded diamonds, we can still find you the best of what is available.

These videos demonstrate how we use the ASET when picking the most beautiful diamonds for our clients.
